“Remember your employees who make your profits possible. Treat them with respect and dignity, giving them opportunity to advance and become more prosperous.”
– Male, Republican, 57, White, Michigan

Nearly 3,000 respondents in our most recent survey shared what they would relay to the CEOs of America’s largest companies, and half spoke to this common theme – asking companies to treat their workers with respect, give them what they need to take care of their families, and be good neighbors – ultimately contributing to healthy outcomes.

Despite this powerful message from the public, increasing inequality has over time left many Americans behind, in jobs that can’t sustain them, in workplaces that fail to protect them, in communities that provide little opportunity for growth or healthy progress. How can we shift this trajectory, building a better and more sustainable Culture of Health for working families and their communities?

JUST Capital, with support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is elevating companies that take the lead on these issues and set the bar for the market. To that end, we’ve compiled a list of the Top 100 U.S. Companies Supporting Healthy Communities and Families, tracking their performance on key issues – from paying a living wage and providing good benefits to maintaining strong community relationships and minimizing pollution.

Through its impact on jobs, housing, transportation, education, and the environment, business plays a critical role in building a Culture of Health. Research has shown that healthier communities achieve improved education outcomes, attract more talented workers, and perform more productively and competitively. By driving change on these core determinants of community health, companies can do well by doing good, ensuring that their businesses are run in ways that are supportive and sustainable.

Compared with other companies in the Russell 1000, the top 100 performers on average:

  • Pay 87% of their workers a living wage (vs. 75%).
  • Have paid 90% lower worker safety fines and 74% lower EEOC fines per dollar of revenue over the last three years.
  • Produced 52% lower greenhouse gas emissions intensity in 2017.
  • Experienced 63% fewer controversies related to community impacts as reported in the media over the last three years.
  • Score 10% higher on crowdsourced work-life balance satisfaction and 8% higher on benefits satisfaction.
  • Generated 3% higher ROE over the past five years.

We hope these findings help spark a dialogue in corporate America around how companies can invest in the improved health and well-being of communities in which they operate, driving a true Culture of Health in America today.
